Provincial Annual Rabies Campaign

This is an annual campaign which we have planned to coincide with the World rabies day. We mount a major INFO campaign through vaccinations, flyers, banners, radio and newsprint inserts. Mobile vaccination units move around pre-planned points and vaccinate dogs and cats. The Vaccine is free to everybody in the Province regardless of status or social standing. Our target is to vaccinate at least 70% of the dog population ever year which is estimated at about 350,000. Vaccinaion cerficates are also issued . We target dogs from one month of age and older. Special celebrations will be arranged for the 28th. Posting of this to follow.

Vaccination of dogs and cats and Awareness creation through Public Address

Tanzania has arranged few activities localised in Morogoro and Dar es Salaam. Our activities are in collaboration with private Non Governmental Organizations working in the country. The World Society for Protection of Animal have provided finacial support on awareness creation by providing banners, press conference and 100 T-shirts. Dar es Salaam Animal Haven will vaccinate dogs and cats in Kinondoni Municipality. The total doses of rabies vaccine which will be used will be Carnivore Disease Project 1,500 doses; 750 doses for Morogoro Municipality, 250 doses for Sokoine University of Agricuture (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) and 500 for Dares Salaam region. The Ministry of Livestock development and Fisheries provided 600 doses to the 3 Municipalities each receiving 200 doses. The Press Conferences will be delivered to the media on 27/9/2008 by the Ministers for Health and Social Welfare and Livestock Development and Fisheries for awareness creation.

WORLD RABIES DAY ACTIVITIES: Ulanga and Kilombero districts

During September and October 2008 a concerted vaccination campaign for dogs and cats is being carried out in two districts, Ulanga and Kilombero in Morogoro Region, Southern Tanzania. On World Rabies Day, Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), in collaboration with Sokoine University of Agriculture and Ulanga District Livestock office will be hosting a range of celebratory activities: these include mass vaccinations, a dance, a play explaining the importance of vaccinating animals and appropriate treatment of bite victims and a comedy performed by the social marketing team from IHI. Leaflets and posters describing the serious nature of the disease and means of prevention have been distributed beforehand and will be distributed during the day. Relevant stakeholders who will attend these events include the District comissioner, the district livestock and agriculture development officer, the site director of Ifakara Health Institute, health officials from local hospitals and clinics and local councilors. The media have been invited to cover the events. In addition to the activities in Morogoro, localised events will also be taking place in Bariadi district, Shinyanga region (Northern Tanzania). Vaccination will take place during the day in conjunction with the widespread mass vaccination campaigns being carried out across Shinyanga, Mara and Mwanza regions (started in July and expected to continue until late November). These vaccinations are supported by the regional livestock offices, the carnivore disease project, Frankfurt Zoological Society, Serengeti National Parks, and the Wellcome Trust. All vaccines have been donated by Intervet who are also supporting the logistics of these vaccination programs. A football match will also take place and a parade will be carried out among the town. The media will also attend these events.

Provincial Annual Rabies Campaign

This is an annual campaign which we have planned to coincide with the World rabies day. We mount a major INFO campaign through vaccinations, flyers, banners, radio and newsprint inserts. Mobile vaccination units move around pre-planned points and vaccinate dogs and cats. The Vaccine is free to everybody in the Province regardless of status or social standing. Our target is to vaccinate at least 70% of the dog population ever year which is estimated at about 350,000. Vaccinaion cerficates are also issued . We target dogs from one month of age and older. Special celebrations will be arranged for the 28th. Posting of this to follow.

Vaccination of dogs and cats and Awareness creation through Public Address

Tanzania has arranged few activities localised in Morogoro and Dar es Salaam. Our activities are in collaboration with private Non Governmental Organizations working in the country. The World Society for Protection of Animal have provided finacial support on awareness creation by providing banners, press conference and 100 T-shirts. Dar es Salaam Animal Haven will vaccinate dogs and cats in Kinondoni Municipality. The total doses of rabies vaccine which will be used will be Carnivore Disease Project 1,500 doses; 750 doses for Morogoro Municipality, 250 doses for Sokoine University of Agricuture (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) and 500 for Dares Salaam region. The Ministry of Livestock development and Fisheries provided 600 doses to the 3 Municipalities each receiving 200 doses. The Press Conferences will be delivered to the media on 27/9/2008 by the Ministers for Health and Social Welfare and Livestock Development and Fisheries for awareness creation.

WORLD RABIES DAY ACTIVITIES: Ulanga and Kilombero districts

During September and October 2008 a concerted vaccination campaign for dogs and cats is being carried out in two districts, Ulanga and Kilombero in Morogoro Region, Southern Tanzania. On World Rabies Day, Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), in collaboration with Sokoine University of Agriculture and Ulanga District Livestock office will be hosting a range of celebratory activities: these include mass vaccinations, a dance, a play explaining the importance of vaccinating animals and appropriate treatment of bite victims and a comedy performed by the social marketing team from IHI. Leaflets and posters describing the serious nature of the disease and means of prevention have been distributed beforehand and will be distributed during the day. Relevant stakeholders who will attend these events include the District comissioner, the district livestock and agriculture development officer, the site director of Ifakara Health Institute, health officials from local hospitals and clinics and local councilors. The media have been invited to cover the events. In addition to the activities in Morogoro, localised events will also be taking place in Bariadi district, Shinyanga region (Northern Tanzania). Vaccination will take place during the day in conjunction with the widespread mass vaccination campaigns being carried out across Shinyanga, Mara and Mwanza regions (started in July and expected to continue until late November). These vaccinations are supported by the regional livestock offices, the carnivore disease project, Frankfurt Zoological Society, Serengeti National Parks, and the Wellcome Trust. All vaccines have been donated by Intervet who are also supporting the logistics of these vaccination programs. A football match will also take place and a parade will be carried out among the town. The media will also attend these events.
